TED Talks to Help You Make Your Connections Matter
I’d like to share a carefully curated list of some of my favorite TED talks. Was it a surprise when I realized that they’re all from women? No, not really. The common theme in these 4 thought-provoking videos is to connect in authentic, kind and empathetic ways.
It’s important not to think of your network simply as a group of contacts to use, but instead as a group of meaningful connections with real people. Connecting and networking with this attitude creates a sense of intimacy, from which the greatest collaborations can arise.
Stefana Broadbent: The democratization of intimacy
We worry that IM, texting, Facebook are spoiling human intimacy, but Stefana Broadbent’s research shows how communication technology is capable of cultivating deeper relationships, bringing love across barriers like distance and workplace rules.
Susan Cain: The power of introverts
In a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult, even shameful, to be an introvert. But, as Susan Cain argues in this passionate talk, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and celebrated.
Hannah Brencher: Love letters to strangers
Hannah Brencher’s mother always wrote her letters. So when she felt herself bottom into depression after college, she did what felt natural — she wrote love letters and left them for strangers to find. This ultimate “pay it forward” act has become a global initiative, The World Needs More Love Letters, which rushes handwritten letters to those in need of a boost.
Laura Trice: Remember to say thank you
In this deceptively simple 3-minute talk, Dr. Laura Trice muses on the power of the magic words “thank you” — to deepen a friendship, to repair a bond, to make sure another person knows what they mean to you.
