This is great advice, Sandy. I'm definitely going to do it. What a great way to jettison your life crud and get a fresh start!

It was great meeting you at She's Geeky! Thanks for your help on brainstorming what my next step could be and melding my interests into what has potential to be a business.

I've been reading some of your posts, they are great! Networking can be such a foreign activity for Engineers that the advice given in your posts is very helpful.

I'll have to buy your book on Kindle!

You are spot on Sandy. I restrict my LInkedIn connections particularly because I use it as a referral tool and would be reticent to connect with people I don't know and can't refer with confidence. Equally, I wouldn't ask someone to refer me unless I knew that they would be comfortable to do so.

Networking is founded on relationships and you must take the time to build those first before even starting to look for something from the people around you.

I have shared this on my Facebook page and tweeted it.

Great idea Sandy. I created goals this year for 2011 but I like calling it something like "What Would Be Heaven in 2011." Very fun. I also really like the idea of writing a leave behing list and burning it. That's a brilliant idea.

Merry Christmas!

Great post. The entire scenario makes me think of a used car salesman with a huge fake smile, pointing at you saying, "But don't worry! I'm never too busy for you!" (i.e. to make more money off you) Yuck.

And even if the person didn't make me think used car salesman, I'm not sure the message you want to give others is that you're so amazingly successful, but you'll have time to squeeze in that referral. (Wow. Lucky referral.)

If I would have seen this, I would have immediately ignored the person. I just shut off now, if I feel that something wants to take and not give anything back. Again, probably not the scenario this person was going for.

Great blog post! I got a lot of visuals on this one. It also makes you think twice about how you're coming across to other people. I know I will!

I attended the session in Denver and wanted to thank you so much for your time and insight on the topic of networking! I really love the "Pay It Forward" concept of networking. It has really changed the way I look at networking events! I will now attend sessions with the mentality of what can I GIVE at an event, not that can I TAKE away! I think that this training (and your book) are important tools for young professionals and seasoned marketers alike!

[...] Sandy Jones Kaminski of Bella Domain provideds a well developed argument against letting people pick your brain by proposing the “no brain picking list”. While somewhat tongue-in-cheek, the article portrays a common frustration felt by specially qualified people who get too many requests for “brain picking” and not enough turkey sandwiches to justify the time-value of the exchange.
Comment on Quality vs quantity focused networking? by belladomain

Thanks for the comment Josh. I agree that "level" should never matter. As I write in my book, "You never know who you meet might know."

I probably should have been clearer about what I mean when I say "quality" as it relates to networking. I'm referring to quality as in an actual relationship that has depth, and hopefully a solid level of trust to it. As opposed to lots of acquaintances and shallow connections where when you contact them to ask for a favor or help with something you're never quite sure if you'll get a positive or helpful reply. Make sense?
